noticed some people talking about this.

I know Scott started a topic recently.  Only a few people replied to it.

So I'm just bringing it up again for discussion.  Each evening I sit my ass down, and for 1-2 hours I refresh the destroyed or abandon vehicles.  The total vehicle count on the server never changes.  For the past 7 months it has stay'd @ 120-125 (I know i said it never changes, but can vary by 0-5)

Everyone pretty much has my vehicle spawns memorized, and you know they spawn fuel'd and repaired.

My main reasoning has always been this:
If the apocalypse started in your town, how many vehicles would be around you?  Probably alot more than what we have on the server.  You would be able to find some wheels pretty easy.


I totally understand some of the members would like the vehicle count to be lower, or have them spawn damaged and needing fuel.

So PLEASE reply to this topic with your opinions.  They will not be taken lightly or ignored.  I will look at them all and come up with a solution that "meets in the middle"

I have heard that a high car count can mess with player ping. I'm not sure if this is true. However, it may explain this new framerate issue we've been having. Chimera and I have noted that the framerate issue usually starts after a player leaves the first car he's/(she had) gotten into. We all know how I speculate. I'm just trowing it out there. Is our large car count hurting our ping?

You could stop respawning a full cycle of new vehicles every day and leave some damaged but repairable ones on the map. No one would try to repair that hippie Lada but maybe SUVs and other decent offroads. If you lower the helicopter amount a bit aswell this might prevent people to destroy cars on purpose because of the increased general value of cars then. But the main complain is probably the ability to drive to NEAF and join the party within a couple of minutes which is an invalid argument in my opinion and lowering the vehicle count doesn't help at all (on this server at least).

I would like to see maybe 150 fully repaired vehicles put down maybe every other Friday and then leave it up to the players to maintain vehicles make it more persistent for the player base. This way we would give everyone the opportunity to get a vehicle but come Wednesday or Thursday we would start to see them becoming more valuable, this would feel more authentic acting similarly to how it would work in the real world starting with cars with the supply diminishing over time.

Besides it would be interesting for what reason "some members" (whoever that is and they probably never post here anyways) would have the vehicle count to be lowered. And then you need to work around the fact that certain people have the resources to send out their batallion to hoard vehicles and build little car forts all over the map which ends in someone destroying that crap anyways and I'm certain alot of people are too lazy to run around the map midweek to find one of the few working vehicles left and take a few days off then.

Walking is a fundamental part of the game so if people have an issue with it they're playing the wrong game, and to be honest I can't be bothered with hoarding anything other than Urals as far as vehicles are concerned.

thanks for all the replys.

to answer trauma's question.  no.

the vehicles all load when server is restarted.  and your client updates what is around you only.  if the server had an extreme vehicle count.  it would make for longer load in times.  but nothing else.

big things that hurt server performance with arma is badly written scripts, and script errors.  when a script throws an error, 9 times out of 10 it will keep running over and over.  which bogs down the server, and fills its logs with nonsense.  it also exhausts your client, because its making it execute the script constantly.

From my end, the performance is as good as it gets with 1.7   Like I was saying before, 1.7 has ALOT more things going on in the background.  So anytime you encounter FPS loss.  if you relog, it will usually fix it instantly.  Very Happy

I think the cars and trucks are balanced fairly well for now.. I'd actually like to see a reduction in a heli's. Losing them altogether, or having them spawn only so rarely, wouldn't be a bad option for me. I've no problem with people being forced to drive around.. Building actual camps and what not would then be viable. as opposed to the futility of finding, and or building, of it now.

I promise you all,  your vehicles are going to be worth alot more than before. Wouldn't hurt to stock up on parts. I'm taking everyone's ideas and putting them all together.

So hide em, take care of em,  maintain them properly.  All that jazz.



now what to do with the extra free time you all have given me????

i'm trying to keep vehicles more valuable, without making them impossiable to acquire.

still a few left over from previous "refreshing restarts", but they are starting to thin out.

I've been placing a few vehicles around, but they are in need of repair/fuel.

just keep me informed of what you all think.



(still gonna sneak a plane in here and there as well) <-----but not 1 @ each airfld like before


thanks again for the suggestions/ideas.

over the next week, I can see SUV's, landrovers, UAZ's, etc etc becoming pretty desirable. (even worth killing and dying for Razz )

I like all the reasoning and I agree that they should be a little more difficult to come by, but in all fairness, this is still a game. Besides being cliche, it's most important to remember. I used to play a lot when I first started, but started losing interest really quickly when I had to run for an hour just to get back to a certain area. Not to mention, gather supplies just to be able to make the run. Some of us aren't as interested in PvP, and I do realize it is part of the game, but how this server was set up a few weeks ago sparked my interest in playing again. It's a great server and if a big issue is a strong player base, exponentially increasing the tediousness of something as simple as travel may make some lose interest, or maybe just me, who knows. I do agree with less helis to make camps more of an option, and maybe even make some of the weapons less available to give the advantage to the ones who spent the time looking for them. I'm still new, but this is what I'm leaning towards so far.

Just refreshed the vehicles for the 1st time in about a week. 07.12.2013 06:06:30 PM

For now, we will continue to do this once a week. Also, I did not refresh/spawn near as many as we used to. So you will notice some around I'm sure, but still nothing like before.

So keep an eye out for certain desirable vehicles (SUVs, Land Rovers, Urals, etc etc)......because these are going to continue to become more valuable. Very Happy

Would it be possible to add Vodniks ("Vodka-mo-biles") the unarmed ones to counter the lower number of helicopters? Or perhaps the unarmed convertible (topless) BTR?
